Moore and Merck...have FLED!
-REPORTS FROM WAKEFIELD & CALCUTTA, INDIA
-
The wife of Jared Dennison's defense attorney called police Monday to report she had received a phone call from her husband, "Sandy" Alexander Moore, saying he and David Merck, the other suspect in the Dennison case, had fled to Kolkata (Calcutta) where they had rented a flat for $538 per week. Mrs. Moore also told officials that her husband was likely to stay there for about a monthm after which he was unsure whether he would return to Massachusetts. Merck, meanwhile, would stay with Moore for two days before flying to Ethiopia, where he had arrangements to book a penthouse suite at the Grand Ethiopian JW Marriott in Addis Ababba. Moore mentioned he would likely go to Europe in a month if he decided not to come back to Mass.

In addition, a Calcutta embassy reported Monday that Moore, but not Merck, is seeking political asylum in India. Police are now investigating this matter.

School Board to hold consensus regarding Perton
-WAKEFIELD
-
The School Board has announced that they will hold a special consensus regarding Principal John Perton after an abysmal 2009-2010 campaign in his third year as principal of Galvin Middle School.

Upon hearing the news of the consensus, Perton was modest, saying, "I did not do nearly as good of a job this year as I had intended. The house of cards just wouldn't stand up. I freely admit that."

It seems as if anyone and everyone involved with Galvin over the past year had something negative to say about how Perton handled things.

Chief among complaints about Perton's operations in the 09-10 school year were:

  • how he implemented a Nine-Goal plan, constituting nine goals intended to bring GMS to a higher academic status, and achieved none of them,
  • how he vowed to use unique techniques to bring students and teachers closer together. while in the process only worsening teacher-student relations,
  • and how he tried to expand budgets for science and math while in the process shrinking budgets for history and English.
Perton is signed as principal of Galvin through the end of this coming school year, through, to be specific, July 21st, 2011, but he does have an option to "opt out" of his contract before July 12, 2010, and be dealt to a different school in the district.

Perton seems to be leaning towards this option, saying, "I think my days at Galvin are over."

If Perton opted out, the School Board would have to select a new principal by July 21.

WE ASKED LOCAL WAKEFIELDIANS!
Should Perton "opt out" of his contract to let a new principal come to GMS?

FinCom turns down DPW requests
-WAKEFIELD
-
The Finance Committee, or "FinCom", turned down a proposal from the Department of Power and Water (DPW) Monday. The DPW requested $163,000 in additional funding. DPW coordinator Jason Allwich claimed the moneys are needed to repair underground wires and make them "animal-proof," as many power failures throughout the town have been caused by squirrels or other similar small animals.

"It's a waste of money, and it isn't going to cut back on many power outages," said FinCommer Della Whitestone of the issue. "We have way more important needs to spend such a sum of money as that one on."

FinCom denied the request by an 8-2 vote. Ally Ripken and Sharon Woods needed coaxing to accept the Committee's decision, but the two yeasayers eventually relented and understood the Committee's reasoning.

The DPW remarked today that they feel FinCom is ignoring them; FinCom has only accepted 2 of 14 proposals given by the DPW over the past year.

Moulton P'ground could go belly-up
-WAKEFIELD
-Brent Yarvis, manager of our local beloved Moulton Playground, commented Monday that the facilities may be shutting down in the not too distant future. Yarvis stated personal debt as the main reason for the possible closure. Yarvis has been having trouble maintaining upkeep and equipment payments.

Yarvis added he WILL try to sell the facility, possibly saving its backside, but could not guarantee the playground would be exactly the same if sold to another owner.

The town yesterday gave Yarvis a $1,500 bond to assist him with some of the expenses.

"It was generous of [the town]," Yarvis said.
